Irlen Syndrome

In this video I talk about my journey with Irlen Syndrome; there is an interview with Peter Irons of OmniRead and I look at some of the assistive tools available to those with Irlen. Since I have had my new glasses I feel as though blinkers have been removed, I am not only able to read better but I now see everything around me with more clarity and I can now retain information with greater ease.   Here are my new glasses, since I have had them there has been a vast improvement in my reading ability.  Before, text would run away and I could not keep track when reading. They have enabled me to have more confidence in myself because I no longer need to ask others to read or repeat things.   Now with the aid of these new glasses and the assistive technology available to me, watch this space!

Dyslexia Awareness Week

This week is Dyslexia Awareness Week, I can't stress enough how important the theme for this year is. The idea is to raise awareness of the other difficulties that dyslexia can cause and to show that it does not only relate to difficulties with spelling or reading. Here's some info from the British Dyslexia Association "The theme for this year’s Dyslexia Awareness Week is Beyond Words. The aim of the week is to debunk the myth that dyslexia is just a difficulty with reading and spelling. We want to highlight the other difficulties dyslexic people face such as poor short term memory, maths difficulties, poor organisational skills but also the strengths that it can bring!" And here's more info on their website about events that will be taking place around the UK to raise awareness. http://www.bdadyslexia.org.uk/get-involved-and-fundraising/dyslexia-awareness-week.html

Dyspraxia - Assistive Technology

Researchers at London's Goldsmiths College say that the Nintendo Wii games console can benefit those with dyspraxia. The Wii and Wii Fit encourage the use of physical gestures and balance to control elements of the games and it is thought that this training and regular use of certain motor skills can be beneficial to Dyspraxic's. See the video below for more info on the study:
